Na quinta-feira, dia 12 de maio, agentes da prefeitura foram ao Largo do Campinho, na zona norte do Rio de Janeiro, para demolir a casa de um morador. Nascido e criado na favela, o músico Edmilson e sua família foram forçados a sair de casa para que os operário demolissem o imóvel. Apesar das promessas, nenhuma alternativa habitacional foi oferecida pela prefeitura às 16 famílias que vivem no local. A operação faz parte das obras para a construção do corredor expresso de ônibus Transcarioca que ligará a Barra da Tijuca, na zona oeste do Rio, ao aeroporto internacional.


Revoltados, moradores passaram a madrugada acordados erguendo barricadas, apagando as inscrições da prefeitura e preenchendo as paredes com combativas palavras de ordem. No dia seguinte, operários e engenheiros, juntamente com um oficial de justiça, chegaram à favela e se depararam com faixas, cartazes, moradores protestando na rua e as entradas da favela bloqueadas por barricadas. Diante da revolta da massa, os agentes da prefeitura, com medo, recolheram suas coisas e foram embora. Segundo os moradores, o tom do movimento vai ser radicalizado de agora em diante, visto que durante um ano de negociações, nenhum proposta justa foi apresentada pela prefeitura.

On Thursday, May 12, officers went to the Largo Camp, in the north of Rio de Janeiro, to demolish the house of a villager. Born and raised in the slums, Edmilson the musician and his family were forced to leave their home so that workers could demolished the property. Despite promises, no alternative housing was provided by the city to 16 families who lived there. The operation is part of the works for the construction of the corridor for an express bus corridor linking the Barra da Tijuca, on the west side of Rio, to the international airport.

Angry, residents spent the night awake erecting barricades, erasing the inscriptions on the walls and filling the hall with militant slogans. The next day, workers and engineers, along with an officer, came to the slum and were met with banners, posters, and residents protesting in the streets and doorways of the slumblocked by barricades. Faced with the a protest by the masses, these agents of the prefecture gathered their things and left. According to the residents, the tone of the movement in opposition to these forced evictions will be radicalized from now on, as a year of negotiations had passed with no proposal having been submitted to the city on their behalf.
