Troops of the Federal Police arrived yesterday (27) in Humaitá. There were two meetings - one in the Town Hall and other in the Army barracks. The Tenharim Indians refugees in the barracks were not invited to participate in the meetings.

Ivanildo Tenharim told me last Saturday that the Indians do not know clearly what actions are being planned and executed in yesterday’s conflict area, when hundreds of people made an anti-indigenous protest on the Transamazonic road, more specifically in the area where there were invasions of villages and fire in the toll base where Tenharim charge the road use. What is known is that the troops would enter into the Indian territory to "do a search" of the missing men (or their bodies) in the villages, since there is suspicion that Tenharim Indians would have killed these three people (which they deny).

The other concern is the persistence of Indian people in the barracks. There is no prevision about the leaving of the 140 Indians from the place. The Tenharim are awaiting a response from Funai to resolve the case. In addition to these informations which we summarized here, Ivanildo gave me the following account:

Além destas informações que eu resumi aqui, o Ivanildo me deu o seguinte relato:
Boat  that provided important services to indigenous peoples, burned by vandals
"They did two meetings, but we did not participate. We just knew that they did the meetings, no Indians were present. We do not know what they are doing on the road: If they are going to enter into the village the village or they are trying to protect the Indians from the farmers’ protests. No Indian leader in the barracks is accompanying the troops at this time. Now we are waiting for the presence of Funai, that promised on Saturday to send a team here with us. We are isolated here in the barracks. We want to leave. It's too bad. It's that way of barracks, all we want to do we have to ask. We're not used to it. But we still do not know when we'll get out of here".

Estamos isolados aqui no quartel. A gente quer sair.

Approximately 300 people invaded early on Friday (27) the indigenous villages of Tenharim in Humaita in the southern state of Amazonas. This was done on the grounds that they were searching for the bodies of three missing men. According to the Tenharim ethnic Indians, the invasion began as a large demonstration in BR 230 (Trans), which started in the city of Apuí neighbor Humaita (675 kilometers from Manaus).

The Military Police, on the other hand, stated that it was a possible "intrusion attempt" in the villages and asked were asked to hurry in sending the task force to the region. Lieutenant Colonel Everton Cruz confirmed that non-Indians, using axes, machetes and fire, illegally destroyed  the station collecting tolls that is maintained by Tenharim for the past seven years within the indigenous land in BR 230 (Trans), which is located between the town of Santo Antonio do Matupi (district of Manipur) and Humaita.

The Tenharim have been collecting tolls since 2006 for all vehicles that pass the 145 km of the Trans-Amazon Highway, which is located within the indigenous land. According to the Coordinator of Indigenous Organizations of the Brazilian Amazon (Coiab), the toll represents compensation and reimbursements for damage to ethnicity. In December, the Indians increased the amount of the toll, aggravating even more of the population of the region.

In an interview with Real Amazon portal, the Indian Ivanildo Tenharim, who had taken refuge in army barracks in Humaita said that after the raids on the villages women with children fled into the forest for fear of being attacked. Only men remained in the villages, he said. He said a house in the village, where the Indians had collected the illegal toll was burned, but the Indians chose not to react to avoid conflict.

According to Ivanildo, communication between Tenharim who are in the village with those in the barracks has been taking place via a payphone (public phone).

The distance between the villages and the Trans Tenharim highway is only 200 meters. Now, the distance from villages to Humaita is approximately 123 km. According Ivanildo, there are many villages with only three families.

"We learned that the invadors are trawling, saying they are looking for the bodies. They have gone through almost all the villages. We are trying to ask for police support to see this, but we have not had answers, "Ivanildo, who is the municipal secretary for the indigenous peoples of the Humaita Prefecture and also had to flee his home last Wednesday (25) after violent protests against the Indians in his town.

Lieutenant Colonel Everton Cruz, who heads the security force by the Military Police in the area, admitted to the portal that "intrusion attempts" started to occur yesterday (26). He said the group of invaders consisted of ranchers and loggers.

“Identificamos fazendeiros e madeireiros e funcionários deles tentando invadir a reserva. Estamos tentando convencer no diálogo”, afirmou o tenente coronel Everton Cruz.

"We identified farmers and loggers and officials trying to invade their reservation. We will do everything we have in our power to prevent them from entering the reservation. We can not give 100% guarantees. If you have a confrontation with the police, we will not shoot anybody. We are trying to encourage dialogue, "said Lieutenant Colonel Everton Cruz.

Rosinho Tenharim, who has also taken refuge in army barracks, told Amazon Real that women and children that were hiding in the bush are unprotected.

"With the attack on the villages they fled with the children. But as it has rained a lot, the kids are starting to get sick, theyt are getting the flu, "Rosinho, who is president of the Organization of Indigenous Peoples of the Upper Madeira, was in Humaita to attend a meeting said.

Refugiados / Refugees

140 indigenous refugees are currently seeking shelter in the barracks, among them 50 children, most of them of Tenharim ethnicity. Twenty patients who were indigenous in the Support Center for Indigenous Health (Marry) also had to be evacuated, along with their companions, and had to be taken to the barracks after the attacks of residents Humaita.

The Indians fled or were removed from their homes by police after protesters threatened to set them on fire. Some Indians fled when they were on the ferry that takes you across the river to Wood Humaita villages.

"The message they gave us is that they did not want any Indians on the streets of the city but that they were not going to kill us," said Ivanildo.

In the group of Indians who are there in the barracks are leaders, chiefs, civil servants and university students.

Not yet scheduled withdrawal of their barracks, but the leaders who spoke to the portal said that for now, they do not intend to remain in the city and will recommend the same to others from Tenharim. "Let's take a break from the villages. People cannot continue in Humaita right now because the threats continue, "said Ivanildo.

Desaparecidos / The Missing

The Indians also denied that the Tenharim were responsible for the disappearance of Professor Stef Pinheiro de Souza, Apuí Aldeney Salvador Ribeiro, Eletrobras Amazonas Energia employee, and Luciano Freire da Conceição, merchant district of Santo Antônio of Matupi, located in KM-180 from the Transamazônica.

“Não foram os indígenas. Quando o indígena faz alguma coisa, ele assume. Se fosse nós, já teríamos assumido. Já tínhamos comunicado à Funai e dito o motivo”, afirmou Ivanildo Tenharim.

"There were no indigenous people involved. When the Indian does something, he takes responsibility. If it were us, we would have assumed responsibility. We had already reported to Funai and said why, "said Ivanildo Tenharim.

Rosinho Tenharim reiterates the information provided by Ivanildo and states that "they wanted to blame" the Indians without proof. "They tell us that it is as if only we lived in BR. There are many people living on the road. There are many farms, "he said.

On Thursday (26), according Rosinho two chiefs who are refugees in the barracks escaped being killed by people who claimed to be the families of the missing.

"They came here with us and proposed to accompany us in the village. They said they wanted to conduct a search, but we wanted someone to accompany them. Except that when the chiefs came close to the ferry, they saw that it was a trap. Many people said they were going to kill them. After that, we do not want any more dialogue, "said Rosinho.

A Terra Indígena Tenharim é composta por três áreas: Tenharim-Marmelos, Tenharim Marcelos (Gleba B) e Tenharim do Igarapé Preto.

The Indigenous lands of the Tenharim consist of three areas: Tenharim-Marmelos, Tenharim Marcelos (Gleba B) and Tenharim of Igarapé Preto.

Foco de tensão / Focus of the tensions
