On Tuesday (24/04/2012) the Government of Acre had a meeting with civil society Valley Juruá to IMPOSE OIL AND GAS EXPLORATION IN THE REGION.

As of May the company Geo Radar should start subsurface explosions called "lines of exploration." This phase is called the seismic ground.

The representative of the National Petroleum Agency, Marina Bee, said the interest of the NPA are in carrying out prospecting for oil and gas in the region, which is part of the national strategy to determine the potential of the subsoil of the region.

The speech of the vice-governor, César Messiah, made it clear that he will not listen to anyone. It is another instance of a top down approach: "The environmental impact of Annatto is smaller than that of a car washing station," he said, referring to the current exploration technology.

Just think of the royalties, even in a region like the Juruá, where, in the words of the vice-governor, the exploration for oil and gas is taken for granted. He further states: "We make heavy investments in health, education, infrastructure, and especially inenvironment. "

The history of oil and gas exploration in the region of Juruá began in the 1940s. But at that time it was not feasible. However, with BR 364, the beginning of summer and during the winter the access to the rail-Puccalpa Southern Cross, has enabled the operation to proceed  in full swing.

According to the map shown by the company Geo Radar, the operation will directly affect: the river populations of ; indigenous Shawãdawa, Rio Bage; Nukini and Nawa, located in the Serra do Divisor, and especially those uncontacted peoples that roam the headwaters of some rivers of region. Indirectly affected are the Ashaninka of Ammonia, and Katukina Apolima-Arara.

How will the isolated Indigenous peoples, that are already under pressure of this kind of economic exploitation on the Peruvian side, and were increasingly taking refuge in Brazilian lands deal with this situation?

Saudi Arabia detains an Egyptian lawyer for defending Egyptian detainees in its prisons

Cairo 21 April 2012

ANHRI denounces the continued hostility by the Saudi authorities of the right to freedom of expression throwing against a wall all human rights and freedoms. As Saudi security forces arrested the Egyptian lawyer “Ahmed Algizawy” the moment he arrived at Jeddah airport for a journey of Umrah” last Tuesday for his criticism of the Saudi government, and filing a case to the Egyptian judiciary against Saudi King to demand the release of Egyptian illegally poisoned in Saudi Arabia.

“Algizawy” travelled to Saudi Arabia on Tuesday 17 April with his wife to perform Umrah, and upon arrival to Jeddah airport they were shocked by his arrest for the application of the rule issued by the Saudi courts to prison him for a year after 20 skin lashes because of his defense of Egyptian detainees inside Saudi prisons on arbitrary charges and facing the king with criticism in a speech to a TV channel. “Algizawy” criticized the Saudi repression of Egyptians living in Saudi territory and filed a case on Saudi Arabia calling for forcing Saudi authorities to hand over Egyptians detained in its custody, accusing the Saudi King himself.

Since his arrest and till now Algizawy’s fate is unknown with no information about his place.
ANHRI expressed its shock of Saudi courts to prosecute an Egyptian citizen and render a judgment against him without being notified of the charges and without even his defense attendance, all because of his criticism of the authorities violating rights of Egyptian citizens in its territory detaining them in violation of the law.

ANHRI said: “The Saudi authorities that is one of the worst Arab dictatorships hostile to public freedoms and human rights not only arrest citizens on its territory but also harass anyone who dares to claim the rights of these citizens as what previously happened with the Saudi activist Walid Abulkhair when trialed and suffered harassment because of his defense of the rights of detainees but the violation this time is against an Egyptian lawyer used his legitimate right to express and litigation.”

“Egyptian Foreign Ministry should play its role protecting Egyptian citizens abroad and react differently from the former regime that used to collude Saudi authorities in its violations against Egyptians living within its territory, especially since the incident of Ahmed Algizawa is just the latest in a long series of attacks on the rights of Egyptians in Saudi Arabia not forgetting the Egyptian authorities’ ignorance of our continued calls to intervene for the release of the young innocent Egyptian prisoner Youseph Ashmawi in Saudi prisons”. ANHRI added.

(a protester flies between the tear gas in Manama, Bahrain, photos by @justimage and @alhojairy)

One year ago, today, after the fall of Mubarak in Egypt, hundreds of thousands of people from the small country Bahrain, the majority of whom are shiites, occupied the Pearl Roundabout (Abraj Lulu) in Manama, asking for democratic reforms from the inflexible sunni monarch. The Pearl Roundabout became the square with biggest influx of people (in proportion to the population) of all the arab world. But the repression by the government translated itself in a violent investment with the goals of emptying the square, destroying the Pearl Monument, allowing the entrance of troops from Saudi Arabia, firing and arresting hundreds of students, workers, teachers, doctors, nurses, journalists, workers of the F1 circuit, government opposition, religious figures, athletes of all areas, where many were arbitrarily arrested and subjected to torture. With the tightening of control by Saudi Arabia and the tacit complicity of the United States of America (which pays a generous fee the use of Bahrain for their Fifth Naval Fleet, also giving Bahrain weapons), not even the report of the international commission on torture, published in October, opened a way for reform.

Sectarian division sponsored by the government was exacerbated. The young activist Zeinab Alkhawaja (@angryarabiya) was sent to jail (not long after her husband had been liberated after ten months in prison), while her father Abdulhadi Alkhawaja has been in prison for one full year (and is currently on a hunger strike), where he wrote an appeal to Denmark, (a country where he lived for many years in exile) while all the night marches in the last months have been repressed with tear gas, rubber bullets and gunshots. In the last few days, a few protesters, which had always been peaceful and had invented many creative ways to protest (such as the use of horns), began to light tires on fire and began to throw molotov coctails.

As the anniversary approached, the king blocked all visas for journalists as well as visas for tourists. Yesterday thousands of people, and groups of young men this morning, all of them waving flags, tried to go back to the place known as Lulu, only to be confronted with tear gas and then having to turn back; seeing many wounded as they retreated. Boudaiya Highway was blocked by the police, Sitra was isolated.

Karen Leigh of The Atlantic traces a profile of Nabeel Rajab, director of the Center for Human Rights in Bahrain and the only leader of the activists who has not yet been jailed. Ben Quinn tells the Guardian that the new job of Peter Yates, pursued by the Scotland Yard because of the telephone SCANDAL, today is employed by the government of Bahrain to coordinate a more effective police force. Ken Silverstein, for Salon, in December conducted research of the media lobby of the government of Bahrain in Washington. But, paradoxically, the USA are the country that produced the best reports on the violations of human rights in Bahrain. Amnesty International conducted an analysis of the human rights violations in the country. Reuters provided updates about the discussions of the F1 Teams in regard to the possibility of also canceling this year's Bahrain Grand Prix. Mathew Cassel (AlJazeera) reported on the issue of visas having been denied to foreign journalists. Here we find the answers to an interview with Victoria Nuland, of the US State Department, about the US military financing to Arab nations, and in the last part, her declaration on Bahrain.
