This morning, the Pinheirinho favela in Brazil has been violently cleared by 2000 Military police officers. The brilliant resistance of the last couple of weeks is sadly tainted by the tragic death of seven people defending their livelihoods.
The federal judge Carlos Alberto Antonio Junior, Justice annulled the earlier injunction of Tuesday (Jan 17th) and upheld the decision to evict the occupation. The decision came in the late afternoon. The judge spent the day reviewing the case and decided that it should be at the State level and not Federal level where the stay had come from. Thus, the case comes back in the hands of Judge Marcia Loureiro, who maintained the decision to repossess the occupied area.
