Student's protests were sparked due to a sudden increase in bus fares in Teresina, PI, Brazil.
The city of Teresinan has a poor quality systetm of public transportation and is controlled by a group of corrupt businessmen who economically and policially dominate the city trough the Teresina Urban Transport Companies Association (SETUT). This group has commanded the local public transport and have been electing the politicians that favour their views for over 20 years.
The city's transportation system, despite Teresina being one of the smallest state capitals, hasn't seen any capital improvements or any upgrades. Despite this, the public has had to pay one of the most expensive fares in the country.
However in September 2011 high school and college students went to the streets to protest against the rising fares and the "one fare" payment of public transportation routes.
Under strong public pressure that lasted five days, and was attended by 30,000protesters in the streets, the mayor decreed an increase on the fare issue and promised to join the transport lines on only one ticket.
However, the "mayor" decided to raise the fare on january 02, 2012, while the students were on vacation. This was presumably done in order to avoid continued student protests and the occupation of the streets.
As a result, the students gathered using social networks as effective organizing tools returned to the streets, occupying the city'smain avenue, Frei Serafim Avenue (by coincidence this is a saint's name) . All protests were peaceful and had the objective of persuading the mayor to reinstate the original fare costs and implement increased integration of the lines as have been agreed on previously.
The response of the city and state government resulted in orders of a police crackdown on the peaceful student's protests and street occupations. In response, a portion of the protesters, some of them adhering to the anarchist ideology vandalize about ten buses, and set fire in one.
Since yesterday the demonstrations were peaceful. However today, the police response was once again ramped up and resulted in police lines storming the protestors using shields and other riot gear.
The protesters sat down on the avenue and soon the officers advanced with rubber bullets, tear gas, pepper spray and all the usual attacks despite the peaceful and non-violent nature of the protesters form of resistance.
This is a brief summary.
The police also beat journalists and tried at all costs prevent the journalists from reporting and filming by breaking their cameras and stealing teihr memoring cards.
More than 40 protesters were arrested and are now facing higher bail in order to be released.
Local media are mostly motivated by economic interests and local authorities are with the SETUT or are not present, perhaps for fear.
On Twitter students have always used the hashtag # contraoaumento and from today onwards are also using the tag #massacreteresina due to the violent police crackdown they suffered today.

Os protestos foram motivados devido ao
aumento do preço das passagens de ônibus em Teresina-PI, Brasil.
Ocorre que o transporte público da
cidade é de péssima qualidade e é dominado por uma máfia de empresários que
dominam a cidade economicamente e politicamente, o Sindicato das Empresas de
Transportes Urbanos de Teresina (SETUT).
Há mais de 20 anos eles comandam o
transporte público local e elegem os políticos através do dinheiro que
arrecadam.
A cidade é a última capital de estado a
implementar melhorias no transporte público e, apesar de ser uma das menores
capitais, é a que tem a passagem mais cara!
No entanto em Setembro do ano passado os
estudantes secundaristas e universitários foram as ruas protestar contra o
aumento das passagens e pela integração das linhas de transporte público.
Sob forte pressão que durou 5 dias, que
contou com cerca de 30 mil manifestantes nas ruas o prefeito recuou e baixou a
passagem e prometeu integrar as linhas.
Então ele decidiu aumentar as passagens
no dia 02/01/2012, enquanto os estudantes estavam de férias, como forma de
evitar as ocupações de rua.
Entretanto os estudantes se reuniram
pelas redes sociais e voltaram as ruas, ocupando a principal avenida da cidade
(Frei Serafim) para fazer manifestações pacíficas com o objetivo de que o
prefeito revogasse o aumento da passagem e implementasse a integração das
linhas.
Só que diariamente o governo municipal e
estadual tem dado ordens à polícia para repressão às ocupações de rua. Em
resposta, uma parcela dos manifestantes, de ideologia anarquista depredou
alguns ônibus, não mais que dez, e ateou fogo em um. Desde ontem as
manifestações estavam sendo pacíficas até que hoje a polícia fez um cordão de
isolamento humano.
Os manifestantes sentaram-se na avenida
e logo os policiais avançaram com balas, bombas de gás, spray de pimenta e
todas as agressões de praxe, sem que sequer os manifestantes opusessem nenhuma
resistência.
É um breve resumo.
Os policiais também agridem os
jornalistas e tentam a todo custo evitar as filmagens, quebrando as câmeras.
Ele já detiveram mais de 40 manifestantes e agora estão estipulando altas fianças para que não sejam
soltos.
A mídia local em sua maioria tem
interesses econômicos e as autoridades locais ou estão com o SETUT ou não se
manifestam, talvez por medo.
Em Twitter os estudantes sempre usaram a tag
#contraoaumento e a partir de hoje também estão usando a tag #massacreteresina
devido a violenta repressão policial sofrida hoje
