Background Info:
In February, the members of the feminist punk band Pussy Riot staged a
40-second protest song in opposition to Vladimir Putin, the ruling
president. As a result, they have been in jail for over five months,
facing charges that could bring a maximum of seven years for all three
members of the band.
Amnesty International has called for their charges to be dropped,
asserting that this is a case of freedom of expression. The ladies
themselves have challenged that they are not the ones on trial, but
the entire system of justice and human rights in Russia. Defence
lawyers claim the woman are not enjoying basic human rights in prison,
as the women are being subjected to a show-trial.
The band members see themselves as part of a protest movement that
last winter organized the biggest demonstrations since former KGB spy
Putin first rose to power in 2000, at times attracting crowds in
Moscow of 100,000.
Events are being organized around the world on August 17, the day
they are set to be sentenced. Many artists and human rights
organizations have joined the efforts to support Pussy Riot and
justice more broadly.

A Amnistia
As senhoras
no inverno
passado organizou as maiores manifestações desde o ex-espião da KGB
Putin
