No Brasil, o canteiro de obras da barragem de Belo Monte, na Amazônia, está parado. Desde quinta-feira, 150 indígenas ocupam a área, para protestar contra essa obra gigantesca e polêmica. Belo Monte será a terceira maior hidrelétrica do mundo. Os índios exigem a paralisação dos trabalhos até a abertura das negociações com o governo brasileiro. No local, a tensão é grande. As negociações não avançam. E elas acontecerão agora a portas fechadas, uma vez que os jornalistas presentes – entre os quais o correspondente da RFI – foram expulsos.

In Brazil, work on the construction site of the Belo Monte dam in the Amazon has stopped. Since Thursday, 150 indigenous people have occupied the area, to protest against this gigantic and controversial project. The Belo Monte dam will be the third largest dam in the world. The Indians demanded the stoppage of work until negotiations with the Brazilian government take place. On site, the tension is great. Negotiations are going nowhere. And now they are taking place behind closed doors, since the journalists - including an RFI correspondent - were expelled.

Armados com arcos e flechas, os índios percorrem o canteiro de Belo Monte em pickups. Eles conseguiram interromper os trabalhos. Seu objetivo? Abrir negociações com o governo brasileiro, pois daqui a dois anos, 500 km2 de floresta estarão inundados, e 16.000 pessoas terão sido expulsas, na sua maioria, indígenas.

Armed with bows and arrows, the Indians roam the construction site of Belo Monte dam project in pickup trucks. They managed to stop the work. Their goal? Open negotiations with the Brazilian government, because two years from now, 500 km2 of forest will be flooded, and 16,000 people will have been expelled, most of those will be indigenous peoples.

As negociações estão paralisadas. Mais de 80 policiais e soldados da força nacional, fortemente armados, aguardam. Estão prontos para intervir e expulsar os manifestantes. Diante deles, 150 indígenas determinados, guerreiros das tribos do rio Xingu, com suas esposas e crianças pequenas.

Negotiations have stalled. More than 80 police officers and National Forces soldiers, who are heavily armed, are waiting. They are ready to intervene and evict the protesters. Before them are some 150 indigenous warriors of the tribes of the Xingu river, with their wives and young children.

Eles temem o pior, já que o (consórcio) construtor da barragem, todo poderoso na região, conseguiu fazer a polícia expulsar os jornalistas presentes. Ameaçados de prisão, tivemos que deixar o local escoltados pela polícia, sob os olhares angustiados dos índios, aterrorizados ante a ideia de perderem as únicas testemunhas de seu protesto pacífico.

They fear the worst, since the (consortium) constructor of the dam is all powerful in the region The police have now managed to expel the journalists. Threatened with arrest, theyt had to leave the premises and were escorted by the police, under the anguished eyes of the Indians, who are terrified at the thought of losing the only witnesses of their peaceful protest.

Não podemos voltar lá, sob pena de sermos presos. Os índios estão agora sozinhos ante  os soldados da força nacional. Não há ninguém para testemunhar se a situação se deteriorar. 

We can not go back there, under penalty of being arrested. The Indians are now alone against the National Forces soldiers. There is no one to act as a witness if the situation deteriorates.
