Garcia also wrote an article in January about the issue  of the Syrian revolt in Brasil de Fato, which today is headed for civil war. Little has changed in terms of setting and participants, but the popular perception of the events seems to have changed. And for the worse.
-------------
The mainstream media insists on portraying the insurgents Syrians as a homogeneous group of freedom fighters, while Assad and the whole "situation" Syrian, pro-government is depicted as bloodthirsty and only interested in power. This view is dated and full of externally motivated interest.
Assad's opponents are numerous and far from unified. Small factions divided not only along religious lines, but they are also divided into tribes and clans with diverse interests. The majority of Sunni insurgents  are sidelined by Assad, an Alawite, but you can also find a few Christians among them. There are secular and Islamist groups, groups of Christians and anti-Christian groups, and groups funded by the U.S. from Lebanon and other independent groups; an indigestible salad from all points of view.
Beside the government struggles not only the army but the Shabbiha militia, whose government influence is uncertain, and other smaller groups, especially Christians and Druze.
The U.S., in turn, have difficulty in getting organized and in arming the opposition - which is fragmented - while Israel fears that a post-Assad scheme may, which is even worse and more fiercely opposing. Syria is similar to Libya, a country with relative stability and good social indicators, for laymen and women with more freedom than their neighbors, but divided into clans and tribes, yet in a controlled scenario.
With the action of the U.S. and its allies to destabilize the country - coupled with a sound principle of revolt - social fractures are beginning to appear and a civil war has become inevitable. On the one hand there are tanks and planes carrying out Assad's attacks on areas controlled by various rebel groups. On the other hand, major atrocities are committed by pro-government groups and not by the army. Assad may be directly responsible, but by the actions of these groups is something that is just speculation.
One must consider that the Druze minority, Shiites, Christians and Alawites fear a Sunni Islamic regime not only due to its religious character, but also due to the possible revenge that this majority group organize against minorities who have spent decades in power.
The Syrian army consists of Christians and Alawites, which is the cause of resentment from the Sunni majority. The response that dominates most of this can result in bloodshed and ethnic cleansing.
A "Yemeni" style exit, was put forward by senior U.S. officials but would not be simple. In other words, an agreement for Assad to leave power, as the president / dictator of Yemen, Saleh, could further intensify the mood of a conflict that, unlike Yemen, is tribal in nature and represents not just the end of a dictatorship, but also of sectarian, religious divisions. Minorities who today support Assad could strike back with even more force to defeat the Sunni insurgency because of this and a fear of being wiped out.
Likewise, Saleh did not carry the same level of power towards the end of the separatist conflicts in southern Yemen or tribal conflicts in the north, as well as the action of the local Al Qaeda, as the journalist Gustavo Chacra noted in a recent article.
We must further bear in mind the fact that the conflict in Lebanon, which under Hezbollah leadership (which are in turn funded by Syria) - and similar group like the  Christian Micheal Aoun's and Amal's Sunnis, could plunge the country into chaos again. This has caused Syria to intervene to avoid repeating a conflict in the neighboring country/in their own backyard.
Again, there is no denying that elements close to the Assad regime, have been committing atrocities, but they are also committed by insurgents. This, however, does not resonate with the commercial media. Michel Chossudovsky, for example, recently published an article by the independent Russian journalist Marat Musin in which he denounced the now famous massacre Houla as a result of the action of Syrian Liberation Army, or the rebels who have massacred families loyal to Assad.
One can not confirm such information, as it is impossible to prove categorically that the action has been the work of the army or militia Shabbiha Assad, but the case serves to illustrate the game of propaganda and counter-propaganda which obscures what is actually taking place in the country.
Another important aspect of the conflict - that is the result of the process of media disinformation on both sides - is a private war fought between Russia and the U.S. for control over a strategic space. Russia sees in Syria - as well as in Iran - as bastions of resistance to its influence in the Middle East, while many of the neighbors are under the American sphere of influence - some after the near destruction by means of U.S. intervention.
Afghanistan, Iraq, Israel, Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries are a barrier to Russian interests and the fall of the Syrian regime would impose a new defeat for diplomacy in this country.
The tenacious defense by Sergei Lavrov, foreign minister of Russia, of the Syrian regime is explained by these interests and also, but to a lesser extent, this explains the question that keeps hovering over the real intentions of the insurgents.
Libya is an excellent parallel, where, after an intervention by the U.S. and its European allies, the country descended into chaos with factional rivals divided into tribes and clans. The country is showing no signs of recovering soon. An armed intervention, as is desired by the U.S. could cause even more conflict, thereby increasing the number of groups fighting for power and extending the massacres. Despite the mainstream media's denouncing of the massacres comitted to date - allegedly committed by the government and its allies - including photos of bodies and through accusations with little credibility - these massacres are also taking place against pro-government groups, killing children, women and non-combatants on both sides.
The authors of the massacres are in turn difficult to identify, which leaves the media of either side to do their propaganda work.
There is no doubt that the situation is complicated. A resolution to this situation is not only far away, but seems impossible. The certainty, however, is that U.S. pressure on the Syrian government and allied with a media smear campaign and funding that goes to weapons for the opposition, only contributes to an aggravation that endangers Damascus and could become a bloody civil war. In other words, the foreign intervention in a conflict - still - inside Syria only serves to make it even worse.
